EP 1. Where Do I Begin Part? One: Diving Into The Bible & The Importance of Prayer

Not only is this the first official episode of the Christian Teen Talk podcast but it's the first episode of the Where Do I Begin Series!! In this episode, I was able to have such an amazing guest speaker, Kristen Rabe. Not only do we talk about where to start as a new believer in the Bible and in prayer, but she speaks with so much wisdom, it’s incredible. So, if you have not already listened, go listento this episode now!! And of course, go follow us on Instagram for all our updates!

In these show notes, I will be listing all the resources we talked about and/or used. I will also be going a little bit deeper into some parts we talked about in the episode.

Diving into The Bible:

2 Timothy 3:16-17

  • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

When talking about 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Kristen mentions the Greek word of the phrase by inspiration of God which is theopneustos meaning God-breathed. So, scripture is literally God's word to us.

2 Timothy 2:15

  • Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Kristen mentions that John is a really good book to start when reading the Bible. She also mentions the book of John as one of the four gospels. So, what are the other three gospels? The other three gospels are Mathew, Mark, and Luke. With that being said I am also going to list all of the New Testament categories.

The Gospels:  Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John

History: Acts

Pauline Epistles: Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians, 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, & Philemon

General Epistles: Hebrews, James, 1 & 2 Peter, 1, 2, & 3 John, & Jude

And lastly but not least is Revelation, which is The Revelation of Jesus Christ.

The Importance of Prayer:

Luke 11: 1-4

  • Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”

Matthew 6: 9-13

  • In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

I mentioned a quote I heard once by Leslie Ludy on her podcast Set Apart Girl.

“The questions so many of us ask today is who am I? But that’s not the question we should be asking. The question we should be asking is Who is He? Because who He is, is who I want to be!”

We break down 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and why we should do these things the verse mentions. To break it down I used Enduring Word Commentary. If you don’t know what that is, that's ok. Enduring Word is an app that makes finding a commentary for the Bible easy. It’s a really good tool to use when you are studying the Bible. Commentary is simply, notes by other people explaining certain passages.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

  • Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Acts 5:40-41

  • And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.

Luke 11: 5-8 (The parable of A Friend Comes At Midnight)

  • And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

Luke 11:9-13 (The parable of Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking)

  • “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

Kristen mentions verse two of the Hymn Count Your Blessing

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings; ev’ry doubt will fly,

And you will be singing as the days go by.

Tools to help you in prayer that we mentioned

  • Start a prayer journal! Writing your prayers out is an amazing tool to use to help you stay focused.
  • Whispers of Hope by Beth Moore bible study about prayer.
  • Praying the scriptures. Psalms is a very good book of the bible to pray back to God.
  • An easy way to start praying is by using the acronym P.R.A.Y. Pray, Repent, Ask, and Yield.

More resources we talk about to help you get into the Bible and into Prayer:

  • If you don't feel adequate to read the Bible know that if you have the Holy Spirit you can!
  • You don’t need a bible study to read the bible however bible studies are a good resource.
    • If you don’t use any guides to study the bible sometimes less is more. Take it slow, meditate on the Word, pray over what you read and ask God to reveal what He is saying to you.
    • If you do, do bible studies be aware of false teachers.
  • Follow a Church reading plan.
    • Don’t go to a church yet/or your church doesn't have a reading plan here is mine from my church.

Thank you so much for listening and looking at our show notes! I pray everything here will inspire you to grow in your relationship with God.
